I'm thrilled, beyond words, to finally introduce this new and unique, Ready-to-Carve(tm) / Ready-to-Burn(tm) 12" Flat Beaded Edge "Mashburn Mashup" Basswood Plate. First, I want to tell you how it came to be ........

My good friend Harry Mashburn sent me an 8” plate with a beautiful design drawn on it - intended for “Ukrainian style” Chip Carving. I gave it a try, but failed miserably. But, with his permission, I enlarged the original pattern slightly (now the geometric center portion), added the Dogwood petals and leaf design around the "rim", and dubbed it the “Mashburn Mashup”! It’s now fully ready to carve in the fashion that we mere mortals go about Chip Carving - what I continue to call Traditional Chip Carving. In other words, this pattern is intended to be carved in the same way you would be carving any of the other items on this Website. Of course, the qualifiers of experience level, skill level, and confidence still apply.

Due to the intricacies of the design - especially within the center space defined by the first uncarved "positive image ring". I would not recommend this Ready-to-Carve piece for most Novice or Beginning Chip Carvers. That said, I have had students who, after taking just one Novice and/or Beginner Class, were ready to carve any Intermediate or Advanced level project. Harry Mashburn was one of those students. From "day 3" (the first day following his very first woodcarving class), he has excelled in many ways. His Chip Carving is flawless, but what impresses me most is his ability to design fresh new, and unique patterns for Chip Carving - of all kinds.

No matter how you approach it, skipping the layout and moving directly into carving or burning a new design has become a very popular concept. I hope you enjoy this challenging, but fun, project.
