This is not my original design. It first appeared, as far as I've been able to discover, in Wayne Barton's book Chip Carving - Techniques and Patterns, Copyright 1984 by Wayne Barton and published by Sterling Publishing Co., New York, NY. Like the "Stars & Stars" Coaster, this Trivet "grew up" from its Coaster beginnings. It's unique in that the Basswood itself is considerably thicker than the previous Coasters and Trivets many of us have carved. At a full 1/2" to 9/16" thickness, the additional 1/8"+ makes a big difference in its look, feel, and usability, but most important, it's much less likely to warp, or twist due to changes in temperature and humidity.
This piece is marked by a small dot in those spaces that are most commonly removed, leaving the "positive image". One of the things I really like about this design is the numerous ways it can be carved, producing a variety of final results that all came from the same pattern. The Positive Image comes about when the 3-sided chips are all removed from between two-sided or "canoe-shaped" pieces. If the opposite shape (the 2-sided Chips) are removed, the "negative image" remains.
A third option is to do both. In other words, carve away all of the 3-sided and 2-sided shapes within the perimeter of the larger circle. Finally, a fourth, and unique looking result comes about when only lines themselves are cut away (as very narrow 2-sided "chips"), leaving the rest intact. Carving each quadrant of the Trivet, one in each fashion described, will result in an interesting piece - a conversation piece! Another option, is to Carve all four quadrants in one of the style just described.
No matter how you approach it, skipping the layout and moving directly into carving or burning a new design has become a very popular concept. I hope you enjoy this challenging but fun piece.
