8" Big Bang" Design w/ Outside Beaded Edge Flat Plate
The "Big Bang" design for this Ready-to-Carve(tm) / Ready-to-Burn(tm) 8-inch Beaded Edge Basswood Plate is well-suited to any level Chip Carver - Beginner through Advanced. The most challenging part for Chip Carvers will be the deep double-sided rays (really just long sweeping 3-sided chips) that curve out from the center hexagon to what appears to be spinning bodies. Although less dramatic, these "grooves" can be carved at a much lower (more shallow) level for a similar effect.
When my long-time friend and mentor, Wayne Barton, first saw this pattern, he said that the first impression he had was that of "Movement". That was, and still is, the best description I could hope for.
The non-symmetrical objects that are using visual contrast in a positive way, are the stylized Stars with their "sparkle" that comes from five subtle "Stab Cuts" surrounding each star.
For those Carvers who decide to give this one a try, there are a number of ways to make it interesting..... such as carving away, only the lines that define the Stars (more of a "positive image"), instead of removing the whole star as shown (which is called a "negative" image). Another option would be to carve away the 4-sided shapes created by the grid lines - either 4-sided chips or dual 3-sided chips, although, that will make for a very small chip. Keep the bifocals handy! ;)
No matter how you approach it, skipping the layout and moving directly into carving or burning a new design has become a very popular concept. I hope you enjoy this challenging but fun piece.
