This 8-inch square piece incorporates most of the "cuts" used in Chip Carving and really "shows" as a Wood Burned piece too! Completed Carved and Burned pieces have been posted to provide an idea of what it looks like once Carved/Burned and finished. Originally designed as a Novice/Beginner class-project, it offers plenty of challenge for more experienced carvers too. The tree trunk and branches are approached as "line carvings" (versus cutting the entire space away with 2, 3, or 4-sided cuts. There is no wrong way to cut the trees, branches, and leaves, although I've found that it helps to carve the leaves first, before carving the tree trunks and branches. Carving the four "square" areas is like "free form" carving. In other words, if your knife travels off line defining trees, branches, or leaves, just keep going. Who's to say, once completed, that any portion was carved incorrectly the original pattern?

No matter how you approach it, skipping the layout and moving directly into carving or burning a new design has become a very popular concept. I hope you enjoy this challenging but fun piece.
