Yellow Tang Roughout / Blank Options
Since the Step-by-Step article appeared in Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine (Summer 2015), I have received many email and calls from woodcarvers interested in purchasing a blank or roughout as a starting place. They're finally here!
As was the case with the Yellow Tang in the article, this fish is intended to be "one-sided". Although, there is enough width and shaping in the pattern, to "fool the eye" into seeing it as carved both sides when viewed from the front.
The finished piece shown here, is intended as an example only. And if you really want to have some fun, carve 10 of them and create a wall hanging!
The first option is a "Roughout", which most define as being just that - Rough. The surfaces and transitions from one part to another are as they appear when I receive them from the "Duplicator". The first picture shown here, is what you will receive if you select Roughout - except, I will trim off most of the duplicating machine's required Mounting Blocks. The Tail Fin and Nose/Mouth areas will be "crudely" shaped much like the rest of the Roughout version.
The second option, "Blank", will provide a more refined subject. After I use "powered carving equipment" (think dremel on steroids), the surface of the body and the smoothness of body parts, will be much more refined, but still require sanding to a smooth finish prior to applying a chip carving pattern. If you already own and use powered equipment, it can speed the process, but hand sanding, starting with 150-180 grit sand paper, fine tuning with 220 grit, and finishing with 320 grit for a smooth surface, will still be required. At that point, you'll be ready to hand draw (pencil) the patterns on the surface of the fish. I provide a copy of the pattern and step-by-step instructions for drawing it directly on to the wood. Please Note; Given the small size of the subject and the number of compound curves and junctions on its surface, I have not found it practical to use any of the common shortcut methods for "transferring patterns" onto the surface - not even pre-printing patterns as offered on flat stock in the Ready-to-Carve category.
