Ready-to-Carve (tm) 4-Seasons Trivet ; 8" x 8" x 1/2"
This 8 inch square piece incorporates most of the "cuts" used in Chip Carving. A completed (carved and finished) version will be posted soon. Originally designed as a Novice/Beginner class project, it offers plenty of challenge for more experienced carvers too. The tree trunk and branches are approached as "line carvings" (versus cutting the entire space away with 2, 3, or 4-sided cuts. The nice part here is that there's no wrong way to cut the the trees, branches, and leaves - although I've found that it helps to carve the leaves first, before carving the tree trunks and branches. Think of carving the four "square" areas as "free form" carving. In other words, if your knife travels off line defining trees, branches, or leaves, just keep going. Who's to say, once completed, that a particular portion of one or more of these elements was different in the original pattern?
