Chip Carved Borders and Calligraphy

It will take once all plans are finalized. Our plan, at present, is to provide wide-rimmed picture frames for the carving surface. An example of the actual basswood picture frame will be included in the "Chip Carving News" blog as soon as it's is available.
Location: Klingspor Woodworking Shop, 270 Rutledge Rd, Unit A, Fletcher, NC 28732 (Near Asheville Airport)
Instructor: Bill Johnson - Professional Chip Carver and Instructor
Prerequisites: Prior experience with Chip Carving is required.
Class Project: Each student will select from two or more design options, then transfer the pattern onto a wide rimmed basswood picture frame, and chip carve it.
Class Description: The Chip Carving style of woodcarving is a great choice for anyone who wants to personalize his or her work in a unique and attention-getting way. In this class, Bill will teach (or refresh) each student the techniques required to execute lettering, grid work, and intermediate level patterns such as spirals and fans. Students who have had at least Basic Chip Carving instruction and/or experience, will also learn and practice calligraphy, and specialized borders. Finally, these skills and techniques will be used to create a unique personalized basswood picture frame.

Tuition Cost: $175 for 2-day Class.
Deposit: $100 at the time of registration with balance due by the first class day.
Additional Materials Cost:
- One pre-printed Ready-to-Carve 4” x 12” x 3/8” basswood study/practice board ($12.50)
- One basswood 4" x 6" photo-size picture frame. Outside dimensions: 9.5" x 7.5". Carvable space 2" wide on all sides
Class Size: Six (6) students minimum, ten (10) students maximum.
Tools, Supplies, and Materials: Students need not bring any additional tools, supplies or materials. A complete “Chip Carving Kit” will be supplied for each student for use during the class. Students who already own their own chip carving knives, layout tools, and so forth, are welcome to bring them to the class.
Each kit for use during class contains:
- One Wayne Barton Premier Chip Carving Knife (sharpened and polished) *
- One Wayne Barton Premier Stab Knife *
- Measuring tools, design & layout tools (compass, erasers, pattern transfer materials, mechanical pencils and erasers.
