Chip Carved Borders and Calligraphy

The class project will focus on border designs and lettering/calligraphy. There will be two or three design choices to choose from. Please see the footnote (**) for information about the picture frames themselves.
Class Location: Klingspor Woodworking Shop, 270 Rutledge Rd, Unit A, Fletcher, NC 28732 (Near Asheville Airport)
Instructor: Bill Johnson - Professional Chip Carver and Instructor
Prerequisites: Prior experience with Chip Carving preferred.
Class Description: The Chip Carving style of woodcarving is a great choice for anyone who wants to personalize his or her work in a unique and attention-getting way. In this class, Bill will teach (or refresh) students regarding the techniques required to execute lettering, grid work, and intermediate level patterns such as spirals and fans. Students who have had Basic Chip Carving Instruction and/or experience, will also learn and practice calligraphy, and specialized borders. Finally, these skills and techniques will be used to create a unique personalized basswood picture frame.

Deposit: $100 at the time of registration with balance due by the first class day.
Cost: $175 for 2-day Class.
Cost of Additional Materials:
- One 4” x 12” x 3/8” pre-printed basswood study/practice board (4mm grid both sides). $10
- One 9.5" x 7.5" (4" x 6" photo-size) basswood picture frame, approximately $20 per frame*.
Class Size: Six (6) students minimum, ten (10) students maximum.
Tools, Supplies, and Materials: Students are not required to bring any additional tools, supplies or materials. A complete “Chip Carving Kit” will be supplied for each student to use during the class. All items included will be available for purchase at the end of the class. Students who already own their own chip carving knives, layout tools, and so forth, are welcome to bring them to the class.
Each kit for use during class contains:
- One each; Wayne Barton Premier Chip Carving Knife and Wayne Barton Premier Stab Knife.
- Measuring, design & layout tools (compass, erasers, pattern transfer materials, mechanical pencils and erasers.
* Both knives are available for purchase at the Klingspor Store prior to start of the class or at any time during the class.
** The "blank" frames (not pictured above) are handmade using the finest quality Northern Wisconsin grown Basswood from Heinecke Wood Products. Each frame component is cut to length, mitered, rabbeted to hold a 4" x 6" photo, and then glued and clamped using specialized splined miter joints.
