​Chip Carving Fundamentals Class
​July 15 and July 16, 2017 (2 days; 9am-5pm)

Location: Klingspor Woodworking Shop Fletcher, NC - Retail Store
Instructor: Bill Johnson – Professional Chip Carver and Instructor.
Prerequisites: No prior woodcarving experience required.
Class Project:  Each student will complete layout and chip carving of a “Green man” wall plaque (pictured).


Class Description: The Chip Carving style of woodcarving is a great choice for anyone who wants to personalize his or her work in a unique and attention-getting way. In this beginner level class, students who have had no prior Chip Carving experience or wish to brush up on what they have previously learned, will learn and practice fundamental techniques that have been applied over many centuries to decorate everything from architectural building components to household items and wooden shoes. Bill will take each student, step-by-step through the processes of knife sharpening and proper holding, pattern layout, and how to remove the essential two and three sided chips, and “free form” designs (leaves, flowers, etc.), that give chip carving its unique appearance. He’ll also touch on grids, and lettering as time allows.
Class Size: Six (6) students minimum, ten (10) students maximum.

Instructional Cost: $155 for 2 days
Registration and Deposit: Visit the Klingspor Woodworking Store; 270 Rutledge Rd, Unit A,
Fletcher, NC 28732, or call (828) 687-3940 to register. Deposit of $100 required at time of registration with balance due by class day.
 
Additional Cost:  $25.00 per student includes:
- One pre-printed 4” x 12” x 3/8” Basswood study/practice board.
- One 6.75 x 7.75 x 1/2” Basswood Project Blank with routed edges; ready to layout and carve.


Tools, Supplies, and Materials: Students are not required to bring any tools, supplies or materials. A complete “Chip Carving Kit” will be supplied for each student to use during the class.  Each kit contains:
  • One Wayne Barton Premier Chip Carving Knife (sharpened and polished) *
  • One Wayne Barton Premier Stab Knife *
  • Design & layout tools (compass, ruler, pattern transfer materials, mechanical pencils and erasers, etc.
* There is no obligation to purchase a chip carving knife. However, if you prefer to use your own Stab or Cutting Knife, they are available for purchase at the Klingspor Store prior to, or at the time of the class.
